About the
Programme
The world today faces unprecedented environmental challenges including climate change, deteriorating air and water quality, ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss, and increasing pressure on natural resources due to rapid urbanization and industrialization. Addressing these challenges requires highly trained professionals who can integrate scientific evidence, policy frameworks, and technological solutions. The MSc ES programme prepares students to engage with these complex issues by providing advanced training in environmental monitoring, ecological assessment, geospatial analysis, environmental statistics, and sustainability planning. The programme emphasizes evidence-based decision-making and interdisciplinary problem solving. Graduates of the programme can pursue careers in environmental consulting firms, governmental agencies, international development organizations, research institutes, sustainability divisions of corporations, and public health institutions. They may work in areas such as environmental impact assessment, climate risk assessment, environmental policy analysis, sustainability reporting, ecosystem management, and environmental data analytics. The programme also prepares students for doctoral research and advanced academic careers in fields related to environmental science, sustainability studies, environmental health, and environmental policy.
Programme
Overview
Master of Science in Environment and Sustainability (MSc ES) is a full-time postgraduate programme offered by the School of Public Health at DYPU. The curriculum of the programme is aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020 and global sustainability priorities. The programme is designed to equip graduates with advanced scientific knowledge, analytical tools, and interdisciplinary perspectives required to understand and address complex environmental challenges. The programme integrates concepts from environmental science, public health, policy, geospatial sciences, biotechnology, and data analytics. Courses such as air quality and atmospheric chemistry, climate change and impact, geoinformatics for environmental science, environmental economics, groundwater hydrology, carbon capture and storage, and environmental law and public policy enable students to critically examine environmental issues and design evidence-based solutions. Through research-oriented training, computational tools such as R programming, and exposure to emerging fields such as wastewater-based surveillance and bioremediation biotechnology, the programme aims to develop professionals capable of contributing to environmental governance, sustainability planning, and scientific research.

Duration &
Pedagogy
The programme commences in the first week of September every year. It is a 2-year full-time postgraduate programme spread across four semesters. The curriculum combines core theoretical courses, computational and analytical training, field-based learning, seminars, and a capstone research project. The pedagogy emphasizes experiential and research-driven learning through interactive lectures, case studies, laboratory exercises, field assessments, geospatial analysis, and data-driven environmental investigations. Students are trained in statistical analysis, environmental modelling, geoinformatics, and research methodologies, enabling them to interpret environmental data and contribute to policy and scientific discussions. A key component of the programme is the capstone research project, where students design and implement an independent research study under faculty supervision. This allows them to apply the knowledge gained from courses such as environmental statistics, groundwater hydrology, carbon capture technologies, and environmental policy to real-world environmental problems. The School of Public Health has established collaborations with government agencies, research institutions, environmental consultancies, and international organizations, providing students opportunities for field exposure, research collaborations, and internships. Elective courses in the third semester provide flexibility for students to specialize in areas aligned with their research interests and career goals.
edX Online
Courses
Students enrolled in the MSc ES programme are also provided access to the edX online learning platform through institutional membership with edX. The platform offers a wide range of courses delivered by leading universities and global institutions, enabling students to deepen their knowledge in specialized areas such as climate science, environmental data analytics, sustainability management, and environmental policy. This initiative allows students to learn from international experts, interact with a global community of learners, and supplement their classroom learning with cutting-edge knowledge and skills relevant to the rapidly evolving field of environment and sustainability.
